Hydration, Heatstroke and Outdoor Safety

When temperatures rise, pets can quickly become uncomfortable and in some cases dangerously unwell. Dogs, cats and small animals are far more vulnerable to heat than many owners realise, especially during periods of hot weather and high humidity. From dehydration to burned paw pads and heatstroke, summer brings seasonal risks every pet owner should know about.

To help keep your beloved companions safe, we’ve answered some of the most common questions about summer pet safety tips, hydration and outdoor care.

How much water do pets need during summer?

Pets need constant access to fresh, clean water all year round, but their water intake naturally increases during warmer weather.

As general rule is:

- A dog weighing 5kg+ needs about 250–300 ml per day

- A dog weighing 10kg+ needs about 500–600 ml per day

- A dog weighing 20kg+ needs about 1–1.2 litres per day

Active dogs, puppies, nursing mothers and pets spending time outdoors may need more water than the vet recommendations above.

Cats often drink less naturally, which can make dehydration harder to spot. Encouraging regular drinking is especially important during hot spells.

Keeping your pet hydrated should be at the top of the list when it comes to summer pet safety tips. Simple ways to encourage hydration include:

- Keeping multiple water bowls around the home and garden

- Refreshing water frequently throughout the day

- Using ceramic or stainless-steel bowls to keep water cooler

- Providing shaded resting spots outdoors

- Taking travel water bottles or collapsible bowls on walks

- Offering wet food alongside dry food where appropriate

What are the signs of dehydration in pets?

Dehydration can develop surprisingly quickly in summer, especially after exercise or time spent in direct sunlight.

Common signs include:

- Dry or sticky gums

- Excessive panting

- Sunken eyes

- Lethargy or weakness

- Reduced skin elasticity

- Dark urine or reduced urination

- Loss of appetite

In dogs, gently lifting the skin between the shoulders can sometimes help identify dehydration. In a well-hydrated pet, the skin should quickly spring back into place. If it stays tented, dehydration may be developing.

If your pet seems unusually tired, refuses water, vomits, or shows worsening symptoms, contact your vet immediately.

What are the signs of heatstroke in dogs?

Recognising the signs of heatstroke in dogs early can save lives. Heatstroke occurs when a dog can no longer regulate their body temperature effectively through panting.

Early warning signs include:

- Heavy panting

- Excessive drooling

- Lethargy or weakness

- Bright red gums or tongue

- Vomiting or diarrhoea

- Restlessness

- Rapid breathing

As heatstroke progresses, symptoms may become severe and life-threatening, resulting in collapse, confusion or disorientation, seizures, difficulty breathing or even loss of consciousness.

Dogs suffer heat-related illness during exercise in hot weather and from being left in cars alone.

Flat-faced breeds such as Pugs, Bulldogs and French Bulldogs are especially vulnerable, along with elderly pets, overweight animals and those with thick coats or underlying health conditions. If any of these descriptions match your dog, it’s really important to recognise the signs of heatstroke in dogs and to know how to prevent heatstroke in dogs.

What should I do if my pet develops heatstroke?

Heatstroke is always an emergency . If you suspect your dog is overheating:

- Move them immediately into shade or a cool indoor area

- Stop exercise straight away

- Offer small amounts of cool water

- Pour cool (not ice-cold) water over their body, especially the stomach, neck and inner thighs

- Increase airflow with a fan if possible

- Contact your vet as a matter of urgency

Current RSPCA guidance advises ‘cool first, transport second’, meaning immediate cooling is essential before travelling to the veterinary practice. Never cover an overheating dog with wet towels, as this can trap heat against the body.

How can I keep pets cool in summer?

Knowing how to keep pets cool in summer is one of the best ways to prevent heat-related illness.

Some effective ways include:

- Walking dogs early in the morning or later in the evening

- Avoiding strenuous exercise during hot weather

- Keeping curtains closed indoors during peak heat

- Providing cooling mats or damp towels to lie on

- Using paddling pools or sprinklers for dogs who enjoy water

- Grooming regularly to remove excess fur

- Ensuring constant access to shade outdoors

For owners walking dogs in hot weather UK conditions, pavement temperature is another major concern. Tarmac and paving slabs can become hot enough to burn paw pads even when the air temperature feels manageable.

A good rule is the five-second test. If you cannot comfortably hold the back of your hand on the pavement for five seconds, it is too hot for your dog’s paws.

Is it dangerous to leave pets in cars during summer?

Yes — even for a few minutes. Cars heat up extremely quickly, even with windows open or parked in shade. According to the RSPCA , when temperatures reach 22°C outside, the inside of a vehicle can rise to 47°C within an hour. Leaving pets in hot cars can rapidly lead to fatal heatstroke. If you see a dog in distress inside a hot vehicle, contact emergency services immediately.

Can pets get sunburn?

Absolutely. Knowing how to keep pets cool in summer is very important and so is protecting their skin. Light-coloured pets, white cats and dogs with thin coats are particularly vulnerable to sunburn, especially on the nose, ears and areas with sparse fur. Pet-safe sunscreen can help protect exposed skin. Providing shaded areas outdoors is equally important.

Are there other summer hazards pet owners should watch for?

Summer gardens and barbecues can present hidden dangers for pets.

Common seasonal hazards include:

- Barbecue skewers and cooked bones

- Corn cobs and fatty foods

- Citronella candles and lighter fluids

- Garden fertilisers and weed killers

- Slug pellets and pesticides

- Bee and wasp stings

- Ticks and fleas

Always supervise pets around outdoor gatherings and store chemicals securely out of reach.

How to take care of your pets this winter

Like people, pets often need a little extra help to stay warm, comfortable and safe during the colder months. From protecting them indoors to taking sensible steps outside, here are some top tips for pet health in winter, including how to keep them safe during the festive season.

Keeping pets warm

Just like humans, exposure to the cold can lead to hypothermia in pets, so try to avoid letting your pet go outside in the snow or freezing temperatures for too long.

Look out for signs of discomfort when your pet comes in from the cold. The RSPCA says pets may shiver when exposed to low temperatures for too long, especially smaller or short-haired breeds, so it’s important to keep them warm when the temperature outside drops.

Give dogs and cats additional blankets and create a few extra places around the home where they can curl up during the colder months. You may want to consider raising beds off cold floors to reduce draughts, particularly for older pets. Cat owners will know that their feline companions often enjoy high resting spots or climbing posts where they can stay warm and feel secure.

Walking dogs in winter

Dogs still need regular exercise in winter, but shorter days and colder or adverse weather conditions can make it tricky for pet owners to get outside. Where possible walk your dog in daylight hours and use LED collars, hi-vis leads and carry a torch when walking your canine companion in the dark.

At Jurassic Vets, we recommend putting a well-fitting waterproof coat on your dog, especially if they are unwell, have thin fur, or they are elderly or very young.

Although it’s unusual for us to get heavy snow in the Westcountry, it’s important to remember to stay alert in freezing conditions because hidden hazards can be dangerous. If you are walking dogs in winter , keep them away from frozen ponds or lakes because prolonged exposure to the cold can lead to hypothermia in pets.

To be on the safe side, opt for shorter, more frequent walks as the temperature drops and remember to dry dogs thoroughly after walks, and check paws for salt, grit or compacted snow, which can cause pain or irritation.

Winter pet care for cats

Most cats love exploring the outdoors, so don’t stop them from going out during the winter months, but do put some safeguards in place and ensure your feline friends can return indoors easily – ideally through a cat flap.

Keeping pets warm in winter is very important, so create a sheltered outdoor space for your cat where they can stay dry and keep warm. Cats should be kept indoors overnight during freezing conditions, so it’s a good idea to set up litter tray.

Cats in particular need an array of indoor pet activities to keep them entertained. Think about investing in a scratch post or toys they can chase to keep them happy and fit when it’s too cold to go outside.

Caring for small pets

Of course, smaller animals can struggle with sudden temperature changes too, especially if they are kept outside in hutches. It’s best to bring outdoor pets inside if temperatures drop sharply – a shed or space in a garage can offer good shelter – but if they must stay outdoors, insulate hutches with thick blankets or carpet and ensure protection from wind, rain and snow.

If you’re bringing rabbits or guinea pigs inside, put them in a cooler indoor room, so they don’t overheat.

Pet-proofing your Christmas

Pet health in winter is something everyone should pay attention to and for many of us festive celebrations, especially Christmas, can introduce extra risks for curious pets!

Here’s how to keep them safe:

- keep festive foods like chocolate, Christmas pudding, alcohol and turkey out of reach

- ensure rubbish bags are tied tightly or put straight into your wheelie bin

- secure your Christmas tree so your beloved pets can’t pull them over

- avoid placing fragile glass ornaments on the lower branches of your Christmas tree or having low hanging decorations, including tinsel and ribbons

- cover water in real tree stands, as it may contain fertilisers or bacteria, so you don’t want your pet taking a drink from it

- keep electrical wires tucked away or use protective cable covers

- turn off fairy lights when you’re not in the room

- common festive plants like poinsettia, holly and mistletoe can be harmful if eaten, so display them out of reach or choose pet-safe alternatives

- create a calm, cosy area where pets can retreat from noise, visitors or excited children

Does your dog wear a coat when the weather is cold and wet?

Helpful information if you are considering a coat for your canine companion

There is a wide variety of canine clothing around in the shops now and it can be tempting to purchase these for our canine friends. We are not talking about fashion costumes such as Halloween or Christmas outfits but rather practical outdoor canine clothing such as coats! Whether they actually need one will depend on their age, size, activity level and coat type. A large, thick-coated Labrador who is out for a run on a cold morning will likely generate enough body heat to keep themselves warm. On the other hand, an elderly Yorkshire terrier who is going for a slow stroll in to town on a frosty morning might get very chilly, as their smaller body loses heat faster. So it is purely down to the individual dog.

Considerations

A spokesperson for the RSPCA has highlighted a few areas to watch out for if you are considering a coat for your pet.

"Clothing could also rub and cause sores and if the animal is wearing it for a long time, it could cause skin conditions. Dogs have developed a very effective coat of their own, which will protect them from the elements. It is adjustable so they can raise the fur to control their temperature. Dressing them in a coat diminishes the animal's ability to regulate their own body temperature and could be detrimental if the animal gets too hot "

Some owners also use coats to prevent their dogs getting soaking wet in heavy rain, which can make drying them off a lot easier, especially if they have a long shaggy coat.

When the weather is damp for a while, we sometimes see a spate of dogs with 'wet eczema' – a bacterial overgrowth that can be triggered by your pets hair staying damp and dirty for too long. This often shows as a weepy area with a distinct smell, the fur overgrowing it often appears matted. If you are concerned about any skin conditions or that your pet is having difficulty regulating their temperature please feel free to book an appointment.

We would recommend if you choose to use a coat for your pet that it is the correct size to prevent rubbing, that there are no areas that can get caught when they are out exploring, and that you remain vigilant for any signs of over heating such as lethargy and excessive panting.

You can even get full-body waterproofs for dogs to avoid them getting covered in mud, but we're not sure dogs really enjoy wearing these. After all, this is Devon in the winter – and trying to keep your dog clean on walkies is probably a hopeless cause anyway!

Preparing for Christmas

As the seasons change our pets become exposed to several hazards, the festive period is no different. Homes are stocked full of tasty treats and toys...some may be appetizing to pets but they can be fatal if ingested.

Small parts of toys and decorations can cause abdominal obstructions and make your pet very poorly.

Foods including :

Chocolate
Mince pies and Christmas pudding
Fruit stones
Nuts
Alcohol
Caffeine

Even a small quantity of these foods can prove fatal if ingested.

Some Christmas plants can also be toxic to our pets and have severe affects on them internally. Ones to look out for are:

Lilies
Mistletoe

Walking in a winter wonderland

Dogs love nothing more than going out and exploring on a crisp, frosty morning. Some Cats do too!

When walking on the roads it is important to avoid exposing our pets to grit; the rock salt can cause burns on their feet. It can be difficult to tell our pets where to walk so even wiping their feet can help.

Our very young and elderly pets might enjoy the colder weather more wearing a coat. Coats can help keep our elderly dogs joints warm, helping to reduce stiffness and joint pain.

New years Eve

People enjoy celebrating New Years Eve in their own way, some with fantastic firework displays. Our pets however can find this time of year very stressful. But what can you do as owners?

Make a den and allow pets to hide
Have the TV on loud
Keeps all pets inside. Including rabbits etc.
Plan walks to avoid any displays
Reduce noise by closing windows, doors and curtains
Ensure all microchip details are correct

Rabbit emergencies- When does your rabbit need to see a vet immediately?

Rabbit’s soft coats, cute noses and fluffy tails often make them the perfect present for a child’s first pet. There is a common misconception that rabbits are easy to look after. For the most part they are, but when a rabbit gets sick time really is of the essence.

A rabbit’s health is determined by a good diet, frequent health checks, grooming, socialisation and vaccinations. Sadly some of these requirements aren’t always met and can lead to a rabbit becoming very poorly.

Unfortunately rabbits find travelling to and being at the vets very stressful. So understandably owners want to keep visits to a minimum. However, regular 6 monthly or even yearly visits can help keep them healthy.

Prey animals, like rabbits will often only show signs of illness when they are severely unwell. Therefore as rabbit owners it is vital to understand your rabbit, recognise any signs of illness early; and most importantly have an awareness of potential problems.

When does your rabbit need to see a vet immediately?

Fly strike

If you ever see maggots on your rabbit you must contact a vet immediately! Do not attempt to clean your rabbit yourself, the vet will be able to assess your rabbit’s condition and remove them for you.

Fly strike is preventable with the application of ‘Rear Guard’ every 10 weeks and frequently checking your rabbit’s backend for any cuts, grazes, wet patches or clumps of faeces.

Not eating, lack of faecal production and depression

Even if a rabbit isn’t eating or producing normal faeces for a matter of hours, it is classed as an emergency. Unfortunately tomorrow may be too late. You need to get your rabbit to a vet immediately! A rabbit’s guts are designed to be constantly moving. Inappetence means the guts are slowing down, resulting in gut stasis.

There are multiple causes of ‘gut stasis’ including lack of fibre in the diet, dental pain, abdominal pain, abdominal obstructions, stress and underlying illnesses.

Mouth breathing

Rabbits only breathe through their noses. Seeing your rabbit mouth breathe is a sign of severe distress. Your rabbit must be taken to a vet as soon as possible.

Broken bones

If your rabbit jumped out of your arms or suddenly kicked out with their back legs they are at risk from breaking their backs. A rabbit’s spine is very fragile and an accident like this can leave them paralysed. Other suspected broken bones can also prove fatal if left untreated; rabbits are very susceptible to shock.

A rabbit can be found in a collapsed state for several reasons. These could be due to heat, cold or spinal injuries. As the cause will be unknown careful handling is vital. If heatstroke is suspected cool the outside of the carrier. Warm the outside of the carrier in cases of possible hypothermia.

Spots of blood in urine

Food can sometimes stain urine resulting in a red tinge. However, should you notice spots of blood in the urine, combined with straining, immediate veterinary treatment is required. This could be a sign of cystitis.

Haemorrhage and wounds

Bleeding from a wound or an orifice needs veterinary treatment. If you suspect a wound advice is to apply firm and even pressure to the area.

The severity of a wound varies if possible; try to remove any visible hay. Taking your rabbit to the vet in these cases is vital for possible stitches and pain relief.

Screaming

Rabbits are rarely vocal animals and you would never expect to hear them scream. On occasions they will grunt to get your attention, however other vocal noises can be a sign of severe pain.

Severe diarrhoea

Monitoring faecal output in a rabbit helps you as an owner determine what is normal. Severe and ongoing diarrhoea can be fatal to your rabbit.

Diarrhoea causes alterations in the gut flora and consequently leaves your rabbit dehydrated. This can be cause by diet changes, parasites, bacteria, inflammatory conditions and viruses. Rapid veterinary treatment is vital to recovery.

Keeping Small Pets warm in Winter

Even if your small pets are used to living outside, as temperatures fall, they will start to feel the cold.

Outdoor pets – Rabbits, Guinea pigs and ferrets

You can make their winter more comfortable by following these simple steps

Bring them inside in the worst weather . A porch or conservatory would be perfect because they won't get too hot. A car-free shed or garage would also be suitable. Car fumes could be fatal
Move the hutch out of the rain or snow. Keep the hutch in a sheltered area out of the wind, rain and snow.
Give extra warmth. Extra insulation on the outside of the hutch such as an old blanket or tarpaulin can help keep it warm.
Even in cold weather, your small furries need access to natural light and exercise .
Extra bedding to snuggle up in . Bedding needs to be changed regularly but extra hay will allow them to cover themselves. Ferrets prefer blankets and snuggle sacks.
Heat pads. Animal safe heat pads under the bedding can provide extra warmth . Ensure the pad doesn't heat up too much and your pet can get off it if they chose to.
Wrap up water bottles using bubble wrap or old socks. This can stop water bottles freezing.

Small pets prefer company of the same species. Rabbits with rabbits and guinea pigs with guinea pigs. Keeping them in pairs means they will have companionship and someone to cuddle up to in the cold.

Indoor pets - Hamsters, Gerbils and Rats

You might not expect your 'small furries' to feel the cold when living inside. But it is important to make some changes during the Winter months

Keep them out of drafts and away from open windows
Give extra bedding to snuggle up in
Ensure hutches and cages are away from any hazardous fumes - such as wood burning fires

Could your pet be Diabetic?

Diabetes is caused by insufficient production of Insulin that lowers glucose levels in the blood. Glucose is derived from the food you feed your pet and gives them the fuel needed to power the body. Glucose is released when food is digested meaning blood sugar levels rise.

The role of Insulin is to lower the blood sugar levels by allowing cells to take up glucose for energy and storage, to keep blood sugar within the limits.

Diabetic patients have abnormally high blood glucose levels. This causes glucose to ‘leak’ through the kidneys, and lost in the urine.

Symptoms

High blood glucose levels results in several clinical signs including:

Increased drinking
Increased appetite
Increased urination
Weight loss
Change in behaviour
Lethargy
Poor coat condition

Diabetes is confirmed by measuring high blood glucose. Results can be obtained by a urine sample as well as clinical signs.

Diabetes can be controlled by injecting Insulin. Although it may take a number of weeks and potential dose changes before your pets diabetes becomes under control. The main aim is to restore a good quality of life. This can be done by stopping the clinical signs of diabetes and reducing the risk of any complications arising.

Injecting Insulin can be a daunting experience, however, at Jurassic vets we will support you all the way. Our nurses and vets can train you and provide you with guidance and demonstrations. Helping make managing a diabetic pet as straightforward as possible.

Routine, routine, routine

Consistency is key to successfully managing a diabetic pet. As the owner you are in control of supplying your pet with insulin. This means every day must be consistent, from the time the Insulin is given to how much is fed.

Insulin should be given at roughly the same time each day
Feed a consistent diet at the same time each day with no titbits
Allow access to fresh water at all times
Exercise should be consistent and not over strenuous

What can make it easier?

When owning a diabetic pet there is so much to remember. Writing things down can help make everything easier. But what should you monitor?

Monitoring water intake will help the vets establish how controlled the diabetes is. Reduction in water intake should become more noticeable as the diabetes becomes more controlled.

Writing down food intake and measuring the quantity fed helps to ensure daily rations are not exceeded.

What could go wrong?

When a pets diabetes is not controlled correctly, they may have a ‘Hypo episode’. This means the the blood sugar levels have fallen too low and is called Hypoglycaemia .

Hypoglycaemia can be caused by giving too much insulin or if your pet refuses to eat after.

What to look out for?

Weakness
Shivering
Muscle twitching
Unrest or lethargy
Fits and unconsciousness

Hypoglycaemia can be life threatening if left untreated. Our vets will advise you to give your pet honey directly in to the mouth

Autumnal hazards

Wild mushrooms and the hazards they present

The recent weather change means that Autumn is really setting in. Wild mushrooms will be popping up in our favourite woodland spots and even in the garden. As dog owners it is important to ensure we are aware of any possible hazards.

The question is can dogs eat mushrooms?

Although most mushrooms are safe for dogs to eat. There are many wild mushrooms which are poisonous. It can be difficult to recognise different species of mushrooms, even the experts find it difficult! Therefore it is best to discourage your dog from eating any mushrooms out of walks.

Symptoms of mushroom poisoning

Sometimes despite our best efforts, our dogs still manage to ingest things we don’t want them to. Symptoms vary, depending on the species of mushroom ingested. Mushroom toxicity is split in to 4 different categories.

Category A – these mushrooms are most toxic. Destroying cells within the body. This can lead to kidney and liver failure

Category B and C – mushrooms in these categories affect the nervous system. They can cause tremors and seizures

Category D – Ingestion of mushrooms from this category can cause gastrointestinal upset, including vomiting and diarrhoea. Rarely is this life threatening.

Most common symptoms

Vomiting
Diarrhoea
Lethargy
Weakness
Jaundice
Abdominal pain
Seizures
Excessive drooling
Coma

What should you do if you suspect your dogs has eaten mushrooms?

If you suspect your dog has ingested any type of mushroom. Our advice would be to contact a local vet practice, mushroom toxicity should be regarded as an emergency, in some cases it could be fatal to your dog.

Try to find a sample of the mushroom to take with you, or take a picture. This can help with identifying the level of risk.

There are several steps the vets will follow. This may include inducing vomiting, taking bloods and close monitoring. It can be difficult to determine which mushroom has been ingested and the level of toxicity to be expected, therefore, time is a huge factor to consider.

Obesity

Sadly the most common form of malnutrition in pets in the UK is the over consumption of calories resulting in obesity

The term obesity is used to describe a condition that is more serious than just being overweight. When a dog or cat is classed as obese, it means that their fat has now reached the stage where their bodies struggle to maintain good health.

It is estimated that 44% of cats and nearly half of the UK's dog population are overweight or obese . With this in mind, this puts our beloved pets at risk from health problems which are likely to adversely affect quality of life. This rapidly increasing problem is now so significant that the World Small Animal Veterinary Association have officially classed canine and feline obesity as a disease .

How can you tell if your pet is obese?

They best way to determine if an animal is overweight, is to use a body condition score. An ideal score would be 3 out of 5. Meaning your pets ribs and spine can be felt through a slight fat covering. Scores higher than this will predispose your pet to some life limiting conditions.

We spoke to Jurassic Vets' lead veterinary surgeon, Peter Martin, about cats and their teeth...

I've never looked at my cat's teeth – should I be checking them?

“Most owners rarely check their cat's teeth,” says Peter. “After all, most cats aren't very cooperative when it comes to examining their teeth! But worryingly, dental pain is in fact the most common pain-causing condition we see in cats in Sidmouth, and most owners of cats with dental disease aren't aware their pet is in serious discomfort”.

So how would dental pain begin in a cat that is otherwise perfectly healthy?

“Usually it is due to a condition called tooth resorption, or TR”, says Peter. “This can start spontaneously and causes a cat's sharp, brittle teeth to fracture like glass, leaving the root canal of the tooth exposed – as anyone who has ever broken a tooth knows, an exposed nerve is incredibly painful. Unfortunately, cats are good at hiding pain. Sometimes owners will assume a cat is just ageing or “grumpy” - when in fact it is suffering from ongoing dental pain.”

“This is why regular check-ups are essential – only a thorough examination by the vet can reveal the small holes or dents in the tooth that are the subtle signs of this condition”.

What can be done to help cats with dental problems?

“Brushing isn't usually a realistic solution for cats – only a few very tolerant cats will allow it. Instead, a mild build-up of tartar can be treated with a special Hills dental diet to increase the amount of chewing the cat does, and an antiseptic additive to drinking water can also help if a cat drinks from a water bowl.

“For broken teeth, or teeth too severely decayed to be saved by cleaning, the best option is to remove the tooth. While fillings are available for cats with TR, we don't recommend them – they are expensive and can break off, leaving us back at square one. Extracting the tooth under anaesthetic allows the gum to heal over in a couple of weeks, leaving the cat pain-free, and we can take the chance to check, clean and polish all the other teeth while the cat is sleeping.”

But doesn't an anaesthetic involve a lot of risk for a cat?

“No, in fact – Jurassic Vets has a superb record for safety under anaesthetic, performing dozens of dentals every month”, says Peter. “ This is largely thanks to our superb, highly-qualified RVNs who help the vets to anaesthetics are smooth and safe. We lower the risk even further by giving fluids as standard and by careful monitoring of blood pressure while under anaesthetic, and offer a pre-operative blood test to check kidney function and other factors before committing to an anaesthetic. Even cats of fourteen or fifteen years old can expect to be discharged home the same evening, bright and eating.”

So is pain around the mouth always due to a bad tooth?

“Not always”, says Peter. “I've seen things such as cat bites, tumours or even wasp stings cause discomfort to cats. That's the reason we offer free dental checks – you can never be too careful in ensuring a cat isn't in hidden pain.”

Cognitive Dysfunction in our pets – Canine and feline dementia

With advances in veterinary medicine and nutrition pets are living longer lives. Pet owners now get to spend more time with their wonderful companions. As they age owners expect their pets to 'slow down', but some behavioural changes can be unexpected. Making owning an older cat and dog stressful and potentially challenging.

In the past these behavioural changes were categorised under the 'ageing process'. However, in recent years, unusual changes in behaviour have been attributed to Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome (CDS). This is as a result of decline in cognitive abilities caused by ageing changes in the brain.

Age catches up with us all. As a pet owner, there comes a time where we have to make a life changing, and heart wrenching decision. Sometimes this may be driven by progressive changes in behaviour. Toilet trained pets may begin having accidents in the house. They may become restless and disorientated. Even forgetful. So long as your pet has quality of life there are ways these behaviours can be managed. Cognitive Dysfunction isn't always the end of our journey with our four legged friends.

Signs of cognitive dysfunction

Symptoms of CDS in cats and dogs present similarly.

These include:

Confusion, disorientation and appearing lost in familiar surroundings

Wandering aimlessly

Staring and standing in corners

Accidents in the house or missing the litter tray

Disrupted sleeping patterns

Vocalising at night

Altered interest in food

Changes in behaviour

Changes in learning and activity levels

If you notice any of these symptoms in your cat and dog, it is vital to book an appointment with the Vet. They can determine if there are any other health issues which may have similar symptoms. CDS will only be diagnosed once all other illnesses have been ruled out.

Can Cognitive Dysfunction be treated?

Unfortunately CDS cannot be cured. The signs and symptoms can however be reduced with suitable management. Making changes to your pets environment, diet and routine can help. There are also some drug therapies available.

Once CDS has been diagnosed and other medical issues ruled out. Steps can be taken to help with your pets quality of life.

Dogs:

Keep you dog fit and at a healthy weight throughout its life

Reduce the distance of walks and increase the number

Remind your dog of simple commands frequently

Exaggerate arm movements and signs as hearing deteriorates

Use visual markers

Accompany your dog outside should they begin toileting in the house, almost restart toilet training as you would a puppy

Cats:

Increase human interaction

Help stimulate you cat with toys, play and human interaction if they are interested

Keep bowls in the same place to avoid confusion

Provide comfortable and accessible beds

Ensure litter trays are kept in the same place with low sides

Allow for peace and quiet away from the hustle and bustle of home life

It may be necessary to restrict their environment to one room

After Brexit it is suggested to start preparing FOUR months before travelling.

2. Your pets rabies vaccination is up to date

3. You have returned to your vets at least 30 days after your pet's last rabies vaccination for a blood test to check its worked

4. Wait 3 calendar months after successful blood testing before travel

5.Return to your vet within 10 days of travel for an animal health certificate

At last October 1st is finally upon us. Although it means Winter is on its way and the clocks are soon to change. At least we can take our dogs to the beach...this time of year can't come soon enough for many dog owners, but here's a few things we ought to bare in mind.

1. Courtesy to other users:

Beaches are public spaces and everyone is welcome, from children to dogs to horses. It is important to be aware and courteous of other beach goers.

2.Swimming in the sea and changing tides:

If you plan to allow your dog to swim, be aware of sea conditions. Check the details of the tides and the current in the area which you are visiting and avoid any areas with strong currents or rip tides. If the sea is not safe enough for you to swim in (should you wish to) then it’s certainly not safe enough for your dog. If your dog does not like to swim, do not force them. Some dogs will be happy to paddle; some will avoid the water altogether. If your dog does enjoy swimming, keep an eye on them in the water at all times and make sure they don’t swim out too far.

Dogs can quickly become exhausted therefore should be closely watched.

3.Foreign objects and litter:

Not everyone looks after our beaches so be aware of litter which may cause your dog injury. Try to discourage your dog from eating any rubbish and take care should there be any broken glass.

Sea creatures and birds may also leave detritus. This may seem appetizing to your dog...however they can make your dog very sick if ingested. Toys and games can be used to discourage your dog from eating rubbish, picking up sticks and eating sand.

4. Seaweed:

Although Seaweed is frequently used as a supplement for dogs and other animals. If eaten directly off the beach it can result in intestinal blockages and severe vomiting. It is important to discourage any form of scavenging on the beach.

5. Fish hooks:

If visiting a beach which is a popular fishing destination. Be aware of any discarded fishing hooks. Dogs are often tempted to swallow the shiny lure and tasty bait that’s attached to them. But these can cause nasty injuries if embedded in their mouth, food pipe or stomach. Dogs can also suffer paw injuries from standing on fish hooks.

6. Salt water:

It is vital not to allow your dog to drink salt water. Dogs can become very sick from drinking salt water due to the bacteria and parasites. Ensure you carry fresh water with you at all times. Drinking salt water can result in sever dehydration and can be a medical emergency. Vomiting, wobbly gait and tacky gums are some of the symptoms to look out for.

7. Overexertion:

Playing on the beach can be so much fun for our canine friends. The wide open spaces are perfect for running along at full speed. Running on sand takes more effort than grass. Make sure you recognise when your dog should have some quiet time on the lead.

8. Parasites:

Keep your pet up to date with all their preventative parasite treatments to avoid any unwanted guests being picked up by your pet from the beach.

9. Sand:

Sand can be great fun to dig up however it can cause irritation around the mouth and eye area. Playing on the beach on a windy day can also result in sore eyes. Our vets frequently treat dogs for conjunctivitis after a day at the beach.

10. High temperatures

At this time of year temperatures generally don't get too hot. But it is vital to remember that the temperature of the sand can be much higher than the air around us. Dogs can therefore become at risk from burnt paws and heat stroke.

The month of September is dedicated to raising awareness of pain in your pets. What does this mean and what can be done?

Joint problems are very common and can even affect younger animals. General wear and tear on the joints at a young age can result in dogs presenting with joint pain before they are considered geriatric. Cats however are more prone to joint pain in their older years. Joint pain can significantly affect day to day life. See our previous blog on ‘Oesteoarthritis’ for more information.

Joint discomfort is generally associated with getting older, and is treated as a fact of life. However we can help your pets remain comfortable and support them throughout their older years. Our vets will be able to assess the level of discomfort in your pets joints in a consult and advise you appropriately.

What would the Vets do and what would they recommend?

Firstly the Vets would discuss with you any changes you have noticed and check your pet over. Our Vets will be able to assess the joints through manipulation.

Your pet may need Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, other forms of pain relief and even X-rays.

If necessary our vets will recommend Synoquin EFA a specially blended supplement to help support joints. It provides nutritional support to the joints to help facilitate the production of healthy cartilage and help aid comfortable movement.

Helping your puppy settle in at home

Adaptil Junior collars have been designed to help puppies develop in to confident adult dogs

Bringing a puppy home is very exciting but can be challenging for both you and your puppy. They have after all just been separated from their mum, siblings and placed in an unusual environment; with new, strange people. Adaptil junior collars have been scientifically proven to reduce the stress caused by such events.

How does Adaptil help?

After birth a pheromone is released by the mother dog to reassure and comfort her puppies. The pheromone can be found in the area surrounding the mammary glands helping the puppies feel safe and secure.

Combating night crying

Every hour a person in the UK goes blind and every penny donated goes towards helping fund a Guide dog.

Last Sunday we were overwhelmed with the amount of support we had at our open day and Guide dogs Tea party. With your generosity we were able to raise £250.25 and donations are still coming in. The money you helped us raise as a community, has meant we can help the Guide dogs continue their life changing work. Assisting and supporting blind and partially sighted people to live free and fulfilling lives.

Jurassic vets have the pleasure of caring for these hard working dogs so that they can continue to provide companionship, inspire confidence, protect, and assist their handlers. Ensuring an assistance dog is in top health is extremely important as their handlers rely on them to perform daily tasks, accomplish life long goals and embark on adventures. We see first hand the bond Guide dogs and their handlers have, and as a practice we want to support the work they do as much as we can. We are also lucky enough to meet Guide dog puppies in their training with their handlers, the work the handlers put in is incredible. Ensuring these young dogs are set up for a life of supporting blind and partially sighted people. Without their dedication to following the training guidelines set out by the guide dogs, the puppies would not grow in to such well mannered dogs, who love their job.

Every year the first week of August is dedicated to celebrating these wonderful dogs and people and what a way to start it! But where does the money go?

A Guide dog costs £55,000 from Puppy to Retirement , however due to the generous donations from the public, a Guide dog can be provided to a blind or visually impaired person at no cost, the handler however does contribute to some veterinary costs.

Guide dogs undergo months of training and are trained to:

Deal with traffic
Guide across the road

How do Guide dogs help their handlers?

We provide the veterinary care for Lena's Guide dog Pete and asked her to explain how he had changed her life.

“I've been Visually impaired all my life due to lack of oxygen at birth which caused my Mild Cerebral Palsy and VI which is all connected but my eyesight worsened when I was 17 and I realised how bad it was when going to college that the world is a scary place and that's when I applied for Guide dog.

I've had 2 before Pete so he is my 3rd.

He's a 5 year old flat coat x golden retriever. I've had him 3 years. We worked in Milton Keynes together for a bit over a year before moving to Sidmouth, he has coped with major change in environment very well. I work at Bicton College and he enables me to get to the different areas without sighted assistance, we regularly walk into town together from our house and we both love the beautiful walk through the byes and on the way home he gets a free run and dip in the river for doing such good work. He has a pet passport and we have been twice on a plane once to Guernsey and then to Italy and we plan on going more places together. We also go on the train back to Milton Keynes and to other destinations across the UK which without him would be very stressful and not enjoyable so I wouldn't really have the confidence to do it on my own without him. Even during this years Folk Festival I've had to go into town for various bits and pieces and to get to my voluntary work at the WESC Foundation charity shop and the narrow pavements and the crowds of people make me extremely stressed but he got me through the crowds like a pro so without him I would definitely not have ventured out as it causes such eye strain and concentration when I do anything without him so a real life changing dog! I love his character as he's not the usual guide dog he does everything with exuberance and happiness. He loves to swim in the sea and wade in the river and play with a toy in Byes :)”

Why check your dogs ears, mouth and feet

We recommend getting dogs used to being handled around their ears, feet and mouth from a young age for a very good reason. Dogs of all ages love nothing better than running through long grass, chewing things up and generally going crazy on walks. This can easily result in objects getting stuck between teeth, foreign bodies in ears and feet and even broken claws.

Desensitising your dog to ear, mouth and feet handling

Rather than waiting for there to be a problem with your dogs ears, mouth or even feet. We suggest regularly handling them and making nothing of it. The aim is to get your dog used the sensation meaning when there is a potential problem, they are already used to the handling technique. Never expect your dog to be happy with the handling immediately. Sometimes it will take a while for them to accept it. Ensure you have plenty of treats and take things slowly. For any help and advice our nurses will be more than happy to show you the best method.

Feet

To get your dog used to their feet being handled you should start by rubbing between their toes and lifting each leg individually. This will also help us if nails need clipping. Remember you don't have to get them used to this in one sitting, aim for a foot a day. In some cases you may have to build up trust for them to even let you touch their feet.

Mouth

Feeling around their mouth by lifting the lips and opening their jaw can help them accept this in the vets, particularly if something might be stuck. Try not to go straight in to opening the mouth. Some dogs can be very defensive about their mouth.

Ears

By massaging their ears and lifting the pinna you can get them used to ear handling.

What happens if you think your dog has something stuck in their mouth?

We all know the feeling of food stuck between our teeth, it's no different for dogs. The feeling can be very irritating, you may also notice them coughing and even retching. Sometimes you will be able to look in their mouth and check if this is something you already do regularly. If you've never 'played' with their mouth, it is best to check from a far.

What happens if you think your dog has something stuck in their ear?

Dogs with long, floppy ears like Spaniels are prone to foreign bodies getting stuck in their ears. But it is possible with all dog breeds. Generally because they enjoy running through long grass and sticking their heads in bushes. Seeds can sometimes work there way right in to the ear canal, causing pain and discomfort.

Due to the ear being so sensitive it is usually necessary to sedate your dog in order to remove foreign bodies.

Grass seeds can not only work there way in to the ear canal. They can also sometimes embed themselves in the foot, resulting in infection, discomfort and inflammation.

Broken nails can also cause lots of discomfort and may need sedation.

With temperatures beginning to rise, the great British summer is finally here! But what does that mean for your pets?

We all love the summer sun and want to enjoy it, our pets included. Here's how you can keep your pets safe, comfortable and enjoy the summer together.

How to keep your dog safe

Never leave your dog in a car
Do not exercise your dogs in the heat of the day
Plan walks at cooler times of the day
Have plenty of water available
Ensure plenty of shade available

Seasonal hazards

Every season poses different threats and dangers and summer is no different. The first hazard is parasites . In summer parasites can be found in their highest numbers. Ticks, fleas and worms are rife throughout the summer months and can cause a real problem for you and your pet.

There are many ways to protect your pets from parasites, we recommend preventative health care.

At Jurassic vets and run FREE PARASITE CHECKS with our vets which allows us to prescribe prescription only medication. Our nurses are also available to discuss the options of preventative parasite treatments, and find a combination which suits you and your pet.

It is also important to check yourselves for ticks, particularly around your ankles, legs and even abdomen. We can sell you a tick remover if you want to be prepared. It is important to be sure that the entire tick is removed, including head. So pop in and see us if you'd like some guidance.

Living in Devon we are lucky to have an abundance of wildlife just on our door step. However they also bring a risk to our pets.

Adders can be found all over the UK, in particular in long grasses. Dogs love exploring and tend to wade through the long grass head first. They are therefore more likely to get bitten on their head, face, neck or front legs. This can cause swelling, breathing difficulties and can potentially be life threatening.

Bees, wasps and biting insects are also in abundance at this time of year. This increases the chances of your dog or cat being bitten or stung whilst out and about. If this is the case you may notice some localised swelling or irritation in that area. Some animals will have an anaphlyactic reaction.

Dogs in the heat

Dogs can also suffer from heat stroke, just like us. Heat stroke can develop quickly when exposed to high temperatures, humidity and poor ventilation.

Coping with the loss of a pet

Experiencing the loss of an animal can be a difficult time, whether it’s through death, parting or forced separation.

Life may suddenly feel empty when the companionship and love a pet brings is gone. Losing a much-loved friend can feel like one of the hardest things to go through.

Coping with the pain of grief can often feel overwhelming, and you may experience many difficult and confusing emotions – from shock and disbelief to guilt and even anger. This in turn may affect your physical health, causing problems eating, sleeping or even carrying out everyday tasks. You may even feel nauseous or experience aches and pains.

These feelings may be very unwelcome, but they are normal and are a testimony to the special bond between people and their pets. It's important to give yourself as much time as you need to grieve. You've lost someone very special – missing them is natural. Unfortunately, not everyone understands this grief. It can sometimes feel like a very lonely experience.

All we can say is: we understand. Although it’s a hard time, we hope this advice will help you find ways to come to terms with the passing of your companion.

Remembering your pet

Commemorating your pets life can help to ease the pain of their loss. This can be by holding a funeral, scattering ashes with family or at their favourite place. Even something as simple as just taking some time to remember them can help.

After giving yourself enough time to grieve, you may want to celebrate their life with you. There are many options of how you could remember your special friend.

Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month

Veterinary nursing awareness month (VNAM) takes place throughout May. Aiming to spread the word about the importance of the role of the Registered Veterinary nurse. This month we will be celebrating the work of our very own Registered Veterinary nurses and everything they do.

SO WHAT DO VETERINARY NURSES DO?

Veterinary nurses play a key role in the practice and are vital members of the veterinary team. They carry out technical and diagnostic work; even minor surgical procedures under the veterinary surgeons direction. As well as working in the prep room, theatre and kennels. Veterinary nurses can be found in the consulting room, in pharmacy and on reception giving out vital advice to pet owners. Generally they are all over the place, juggling multiple jobs! Including laundry, cleaning and making tea!

Typically our nurses also run clinics throughout the week. They take the lead on weight clinics, nail clipping, anal gland expression, dental checks, behaviour queries, dressing changes, post operative checks and suture removal. Along with blood pressure checks in elderly cats and even talking about End of life. Every clinic is structured and if needed a vet is on hand for a second opinion. A nurses aim is to become a friend to both the client and of course the pet.

WHO’S LOOKING AFTER YOUR PET WHEN THEY’RE HOSPITALISED?

Vet visits can be traumatic for both pets and owners, so knowing who’s looking after your pet can be reassuring. Whether your pet is staying for a routine procedure, major surgery or emergency treatment. RVNs are responsible for carrying out the nursing care when working alongside the veterinary surgeon. Vet nurses undertake a wide range of tasks including giving medication, monitoring vital signs and intravenous fluids, taking bloods and most importantly giving cuddles! Their list of duties is endless.

RVNs are also trained to assist the veterinary surgeon surgically. As part of the surgical team and monitoring the levels of anaesthesia closely throughout the procedure. Their training helps them to recognise the stages of anaesthesia, potential problems and ensure a steady recovery. If the vet needs a second pair of hands to help during a difficult procedure, the nurses will be on hand to scrub in and assist the vet where necessary.

Any in-house laboratory tests are usually also performed by the nurses. They will take the blood samples, run them, calculate a PCV and hand the results over to the vet for interpretation. Other in-house tests the nurses will perform are urinalysis and microscopy.

Veterinary nurses are a crucial part of a patients recovery and support to the veterinary surgeon. In the last 58 years Veterinary nursing has come a long way. So here's to all the Veterinary nurses and Student Veterinary nurses, past, present and in the future!

Is there an emergency vet's in Sidmouth?

Jurassic Vets Sidmouth provide a 24-hour emergency service on site. This means that you will not have to drive further than normal and have to worry about finding a new premises far from home in an emergency. Your pet will be able to seen in a familiar environment with all the equipment readily available to help.

Can I just come to the practice if I have an emergency?

If you feel you have a genuine emergency outside of normal working hours please call the number provided above. The duty vet will be able to offer advice over the phone on the best course of action. If the vet feels it is necessary for you to be seen they will ask you to attend the practice.

Who will I see Out of Hours?

Jurassic Vets Out of Hours service is run by our hard-working regular staff in their own spare time. We think it is important that your pet receives consistent care and it can also be more settling in an emergency for both of you to be greeted with familiar faces. We have one vet and one veterinary nurse on call each night to ensure this happens.

What if my pet needs to be treated out of hours?

Out of Hours Emergency Service is intended for registered clients of Jurassic Vets and holiday visitors to East Devon within a 7 mile radius. If you have an emergency and are not a Jurassic Vets client we would advise calling your own vets first as they will be aware of your pets history.

It is important to be aware that the charges for emergency out of hours consultations and treatments are naturally higher and will vary depending on client eligibility. For example Pet Health Club (PHC) members receive reduced charges for these consultations as part of their membership benefits. Please ask if you require more information on prices, eligibility or Pet Health Club membership . Does your pet have bad breath? They could be suffering from dental disease.

We all know the importance of our own dental health. However, are we following the same rules for our pets? It’s important to look after our pets’ teeth, ensuring good health and freedom from disease and decay.

What is Dental Disease?

Dental disease begins with a small amount of plaque that forms on the tooth's surface (consisting of salivary deposits, bacteria and food particles). If ignored, this can build up to form dental tartar ( known as calculus), which in turn can cause noticeable gum disease and inflammation, leading to several unpleasant conditions such as gum recession, tooth root exposure and decay. Once severe dental disease occurs your pet will require Veterinary attention and intervention. This will require a general anaesthetic and it is often at this time the Veterinary Surgeon finds that multiple tooth extractions may be necessary.

Have you ever experienced a tooth ache?

It’s the same for our pets, they just can’t tell us. Dental disease causes localised pain in the mouth and if left to progress it can affect the rest of your pet’s body too. In the most severe cases the inflamed, damaged gums can absorb the bacteria from the tartar, which can then access the bloodstream to spread throughout the body, affecting the heart and kidneys in particular. This can seriously impact your pet’s overall health, especially if they’re elderly, already unwell or fragile in any other way.

Signs of Dental Problems

If your pet has dental disease, the first symptom will more than likely be bad breath (known as halitosis). You may notice that they appear uncomfortable when they eat – or they may chew with one side of their mouth or regularly drop food.

But you can also look out for the following signs for dental problems:

-Bad Breath
-Dribbling
-Sore Mouth
-Difficulty eating
-Loose teeth, teeth falling out
-Bleeding gums
-Pawing face
-Yellow or brown tartar

Preventing Dental Disease.

As with most diseases, prevention is far better than cure. There are numerous ways to prevent dental disease:

Dental hygiene – Some of you may have noticed at our reception desk we now stock Finger Brushes, this is because tooth brushing is the gold standard of dental care for pets and, as with humans, it should be done ideally every day, or at least twice a week. These brushes are smaller than a human toothbrush and have softer bristles. Human toothpastes can not be used for pets as have the potential to cause stomach upsets. However, you can use an appropriate animal toothbrush and paste. We would be happy to advise you on what is best for your pet. Before you begin caution should always be taken to avoid any injuries to either you or your pet. Brushing your pets teeth can be a process that takes time to master. You can make an appointment with one of our Veterinary Nurses to discuss your pets dental routine and get advice on the best way to brush. Although Cats and Dogs require their teeth brushed daily it is not just cats and dogs that require dental management, smaller pets like Rabbits, Hamsters and Guinea Pigs can also encounter dental problems and have different dental hygiene requirements.
Dental diets – Several pet food companies now offer dental diets, designed to combat dental disease. Dental kibbles of a particular shape, size and texture have a mild abrasive effect and are formulated to clean your pet’s teeth as they chew.
Dental chews/treats – Are designed to work in much the same way as diets. However caution is advised with dental treats and chews as some of them contain a high quantity of fat and it is advised that pets are supervised at all times with any chews.

Jurassic Vet's veterinary nurse Julie is running the London marathon in aid of animals.

Julie our registered veterinary nurse has been lucky enough to secure herself a place in this years Virgin London Marathon. Many of you are already aware that she is a keen runner and have seen her pounding the streets around Sidmouth.

She says “the training is grueling, but the final 26.2 miles is the prize”

She has picked the Blue Cross charity to run for and we could not be happier!

When Julie was asked why she picked the Blue Cross here's what she said:

"... they help all animals. My love of animals started at a very young age, now with my job working with them my dream came true. There are a lot of people that don’t share my love of animals and abuse them, the Blue Cross helps them! Some people love their animals and can not afford them, again the Blue Cross helps....it’s a great cause"

Preparing your pet for winter: Osteoarthritis

What is osteoarthritis? And how does it affect our pets.

Arthritis is a condition which causes inflammation in the joints, making movement painful and difficult. Osteoarthritis, is also referred to as degenerative joint disease and is used to describe the progressive deterioration of the joints as a result of the inflammation. Osteoarthritis is a very common degenerative joint disease in our pets and it is estimated that around 30-50% of dogs and cats will be affected at some point in their lives.

In humans osteoarthritis is usually associated with getting older and the related ‘wear and tear’ of joints. However in our canine companions osteoarthritis can usually be attributed to a specific underlying cause such as developmental conditions like elbow dysplasia, hip dysplasia or traumatic injuries involving ligaments and bones meaning symptoms can often be seen earlier in life. On the other hand our Feline friends are more commonly affected by ‘wear and tear’ with cats displaying symptoms later in life than dogs.

Why are we talking about pet osteoarthritis now?

The symptoms of osteoarthritis worsen with the arrival of the cold weather, and as we are expecting our cold snap to hit the UK this may possibly be the time that symptoms present in our pets. Pets with osteoarthritis will suffer the most in autumn and winter and as a result additional measures need to be taken during these seasons to alleviate the pain.

What are the signs of osteoarthritis in my dog or cat?

Seemingly reluctant to walk or jump
Appearing stiff or lame, may be limping. This may be more evident after a period of rest or after a period of exercise. Pain: this is usually observed as vocalisation (whining), altered behaviour (including aggression), not wanting to be touched/stroked, or even just quiet and out of sorts.

What should I do if I notice these symptoms in my pet?

Jurassic Vets Sidmouth advent calendar- Common Christmas dangers to our pets

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas! This is the time of year when many of us tend to indulge, celebrate and have fun with those around us. For many of us our pets are as much a part of the family as the people we have visiting so will normally be enjoying some of the action too. With this in mind the festive season also presents a world of hidden dangers to our four-legged friends. This time of year we usually see an influx of questions from pet owners such as: Are Christmas trees poisonous to dogs and cats? What should you not feed your dog at Christmas? Is Christmas pudding poisonous to dogs? Is tinsel harmful to dogs and cats?... and much more!

So from toxic foods to dangerous seasonal plants Jurassic Vets have designed their very own advent calendar covering the most common dangers, to ensure your pets remain safe this Christmas.

1) Chocolate- Is chocolate bad for dogs?

During Christmas there is often chocolate lying around the house. No matter how it is packaged chocolate needs to be kept out of reach of our canine friends. Here's why:

Is chocolate poisonous to dogs?
The answer to the first question is "yes". Chocolate and cocoa products is poisonous to dogs and in large enough amounts can sadly be fatal. The toxic component of chocolate is Theobromine. Whilst humans can easily metabolise Theobromine it is not the same for our dogs. Dogs metabolise Theobromine much more slowly, causing it to build up to toxic levels in their system.
How much chocolate is poisonous to a dog?
The level of toxicity of chocolate to your dog depends on the type of chocolate e.g white, milk, dark chocolate, the amount consumed and your dog's size. In general a larger dog could consume more chocolate than a small dog before suffering ill effects. If your dog has eaten chocolate especially if you have a small dog that has eaten a box of chocolates, you need to call us right away. Do not wait.
What are the symptoms if my dog eats chocolate?
Initially chocolate poisoning will usually present with severe hyperactivity. So if you suspect your dog has eaten chocolate and they are hyperactive, panting lots, unable to settle please call us. In extreme cases large amounts of Theobromine can produce muscle tremors, seizures, an irregular heartbeats, internal bleeding, organ damage or a heart attack.

What do I do if my dog has eaten chocolate?

If you are worried your dog has eaten chocolate call us on 01395 493333. We provide our own out of hours emergency service and will be available on this number. We will need to know what type of chocolate your dog has eaten and the amount, it is helpful to have the packet handy if possible as this will say the amount in grams and usually the percentage of cocoa to ensure they receive they appropriate level of treatment.

If you are worried or suspect that your dog may have eaten a large quantity of chocolate and they are showing any of the signs listed above, call us immediately.

2) Grapes, Raisins, Sultanas and Currants- Is it OK for my dog to eat grapes,raisins, sultanas or currants?

The answer is "No". It is not OK for our dogs to eat grapes, raisins, sultanas and currants. These are everywhere at Christmas! Grapes can be found along side their good friend the cheese board, whilst raisins, sultanas and currants are hidden away in mince pies and Christmas cakes! Some of you may remember our Christmas tale from a few years ago where the canine in question got hold of a whole Christmas cake and became poorly.

How dangerous are grapes and raisins to dogs?
It only takes a very small amount of grapes, raisins, sultanas or currants to cause severe issues in some dogs and can even cause fatalities. Unlike chocolate, the problem with these fruits is there is no correlation between the amount of fruit eaten and the size of dog and research has not yet revealed which part of the grape is toxic to our dogs. Meaning whilst one dog may have eaten a handful and been OK, it may only take eating a single one to prove fatal in another dog. For this reason, it’s not advisable to feed any grapes, raisins, sultanas or currants to your dog. Our simple advice is to be aware of any products containing these fruits and to store foods containing these ingredients well out of reach of your dog. If you’re baking at home this Christmas with these potentially toxic ingredients be extra careful and do not leave children alone with your dogs in the kitchen.

How long does it take for raisins and grapes to affect your dog?
If you suspect your pet has eaten any of these fruits please contact us immediately as quick treatment is key to a favourable prognosis. If left too long in the most serious cases these fruits can cause sudden kidney and liver failure so it is advisable to contact us before any symptoms are shown, so the appropriate level of treatment can be determined.

3) Poinsettias- What happens if a cat eats poinsettia?

During the festive season Poinsettias are a popular Christmas plant and are often found around the home. Known in latin as Euphorbia pulcherrima, the Poinsettia can be mildly toxic to cats and dogs.

It is the milky white sap within the Poinsettia which contains mildly toxic chemicals. When ingested by our cats or dogs, mild signs of vomiting, drooling, or rarely, diarrhea may be seen. If the milky sap comes into contact with your pets skin, it may cause irritation such as redness, swelling, and itchiness. Rarely, eye exposure can result in mild irritation. There is no antidote for Poinsettia poisoning and symptoms are normally mild and will resolve with time. However if symptoms seem persistent or severe it is important that you seek veterinary advice and call us as soon as possible.

Alternate names: Euphorbia, lobster flower, flame leaf flower, Flower of the Holy Night, Flower of Christmas Eve, Crown of the Andes, Easter flower

4) Antifreeze (Ethylene glycol): Is deicer poisonous to cats?

Is de-icer poisonous to cats? The answer to this question is "YES extremely". This is an important one to take note of! We have used reliable information from the Pet poisons helpline and the RSPCA to help put this together.

This time of year, the weather is turning colder and the sales of antifreeze begin to increase. Antifreeze contains a chemical called Ethylene Glycol which is highly toxic to cats and dogs. As little as a teaspoon ingested by a cat can be fatal and as little as a tablespoon ingested by a dog can result in severe acute kidney failure and death. To stop this happening please ensure all accidental spillages are avoided as ethylene glycol is known to taste sweet to pets. Store bottles safely, cleaning up spillages instantly and disposing of antifreeze (ethylene glycol) products responsibly.

You do not have to own a pet to follow these rules. It is not just antifreeze that contains ethylene glycol, you can also find this fatal chemical in radiator coolant (which typically contains 95% ethylene glycol), wind-screen deicing agents, motor oils, hydraulic brake fluid, developing solutions for photography, paints etc. When dogs or cats are exposed to ethylene glycol, immediate treatment is necessary with no delay!

The poisoning with ethylene glycol can be considered in three stages :

Stage 1: This occurs within 30 minutes to 12 hours, and looks similar to alcohol poisoning. Signs include: wobbling or unsteady gait, drooling, vomiting, seizures, and excessive thirst and urination.

Stage 2: This occurs within 12-24 hours post-exposure, and clinical signs seem to “resolve” when in fact more severe internal injury is still occurring.

Stage 3: In cats, this stage occurs 12-24 hours after ethylene glycol exposure. In dogs, this stage occurs 36-72 hours post-ingestion. During this stage, severe kidney failure is underway. Signs of decreased appetite, lethargy, drooling, bad breath, coma, depression, vomiting, and seizures.

Prompt and aggressive therapy is essential.

5) Rock Salt/Road Grit: What happens if a dog eats rock salt?

This time of year we will often see the gritters out and about gritting the roads with Rock salt. Rock salt is a mixture of salt (sodium chloride) and grit. This is used to help de-ice roads and pavements during the colder months. Rock salt can be a danger to our pets, especially dogs and cats. The danger comes when our pets walk through the grit and then lick it from their paws or fur. For this reason it is difficult to say how much needs to be ingested for signs of toxicity to be seen. Even a small amount of pure salt can be very dangerous to our pets.

Salt poisoning in dogs and cats can result in the following symptoms: vomiting, diarrhoea, lack of appetite, lethargy, wobbly walking, excessive thirst or urination, tremors and kidney injury. In the most severe cases a small amount of rock salt ingested by our pets can results in death. Therefore we advise do not delay. 6) Human medication: Can I give human medication to my pet?

Can I give human painkillers to my pet? The answer is "No". If you think your pet is pain please contact us ASAP.

At this time of year we see an increase in cases where people have tried to medicate their pets at home using information from unreliable internet sources, this can be extremely dangerous and potentially fatal! Similarly, you should take steps to ensure household medications are out of reach of pets to avoid a potentially harmful or fatal accidents. If you are concerned at all about your pet over the festive period please check our opening times and be aware that we will still be offering our usual 24/7 emergency care.

It is important to note that every species is different and what is safe for humans can be fatal to a dog or cat. Never administer any medications to your pet unless instructed to do so by your veterinary surgeon. Additionally do not attempt to use a painkiller in one species, such as a cat, because you know you have used it safely in another animal e.g. a dog.

Ibuprofen, Aspirin and Paracetomol are common poisons in pets this time of year. These are popular, effective medications used to treat inflammation and pain in humans , but they should not be given to pets. As these drugs can be toxic to dogs and cats, although cats are much more susceptible to this toxicity than dogs. A single 200 milligram ibuprofen tablet can be fatal to a cat or a small dog. Toxic effects can occur rapidly and damage the kidneys and stomach. Do not self medicate your pets with human medications under any circumstances!

If you think your pet may have accidentally ingested any human medications call us immediately. Symptoms include: Vomiting, Weakness, Lethargy, Lack of appetite and Black, tarry faeces

What should I do if my pet is in pain?

If you are at all worried that your pet may be in pain please call us for advice. As a profession we have access to alternative drugs that are safe for your pet and licensed for use in animals.

7) Caffeine. Is caffeine harmful to my pet?

Many owners may not be aware that caffeine IS harmful to pets. Humans are increasing their caffeine consumption meaning that the potential for our pets to be exposed to this danger is becoming greater. The Pet Poison Helpline catagorise caffeine's Level of toxicity as Generally moderate to severe/life-threatening. Caffeine can be found in several sources around the home. The main sources are: coffee, tea, caffeinated fizzy drinks and some diet tablets and weight lifting supplements. Interestingly, caffeine is a cousin chemical of the toxic compound found in chocolate: Theobromine (day one of the advent calendar).

What happens if my pet has had caffeine?
Firstly call the practice immediately if you think your pet has ingested any caffeine. Our Veterinary surgeons will be able to provide you with over the phone advice to ensure the correct treatment is given. Signs to look out for are hyperactivity, restlessness, vomiting, a fast and/ or irregular heart rate, tremors, feeling hot to the touch, seizures, collapse and even death is possible.

How much caffeine is fatal to my pet?
Dogs and cats are more sensitive to the effects of caffeine than people. If your pet has had 1-2 laps of a moderately caffeinated product such as tea or soda, it is likely that this will not contain enough caffeine to cause poisoning, however signs should still be monitored. If your pet was to ingest coffee grounds, tea bags or 1-2 diet/weight lifting pills this could prove fatal to a small dog or cat and veterinary attention would be needed urgently. If your pet has ingested any caffeine please call us immediately on 01395 493333.

8)Xylitol

Over Christmas we often consume more sweet goods or have them around our homes. A sugar-free sweetener called Xylitol is often found in the these products, for example: candy canes, chewing gums and even toothpastes. It is important to keep these products out of reach of pets, especially dogs. Xylitol is poisonous to dogs. Levels of toxicity are potentially mild to severe but depend on the amount ingested.

It is important to be aware that signs of Xylitol poisoning vary and can present rapidily or be delayed. So if you think your pet may have ingested Xylitol it is best to call us right away.

Common signs to watch out for are:

Weakness
Lethargy
Collapse
Vomiting
Tremors
Seizures
Jaundice (yellow skin or eyes)

9) Christmas decorations

Those of you that own a cat will be aware of how appealing the Christmas tree can be to them! Many cats are naturally curious of anything new and shiny and have a tendency to climb trees. So popping a brightly decorated Christmas tree up in the corner of a room can be oh so tempting! Christmas decorations can pose a hazard to our pets and there are some main points to consider.

Tinsel and other hanging decorations like baubles. These are particularly tempting for cats to play with and can often resemble cat toys. Besides the obvious risk of finding your Christmas tree on the floor there is a risk that our pets may ingest or even break Christmas decorations , causing injury or serious illness. Tinsel and angel hair are known to cause blockages if ingested and can even be fatal.

A current trend on Instagram shows people wrapping their pets in Christmas lights for photos. Please do not do this. Christmas lights can pose a real danger to pets on many levels. If they decide to chew on any electrical wiring or panic and become tangled the consequences don't bare thinking about for the sake of a photo. Ensure any wiring is not exposed and pets are always supervised around the Christmas tree. Also ensure no hazardous presents are left wrapped underneath the tree.

SNOW GLOBES OFTEN CONTAIN ANTIFREEZE (EYTHLENE GLYCOL, see day 4 of Advent Calendar)! Snow globes should be avoided to prevent any risk of accidental breakage or leaks. Be sure to check what chemicals your snow globe contains and keep it well out of the reach of any pets.

10) Bleach and cleaning products.

It's that time of year when many of us are using cleaning products. If you have pets around it is important to be cautious with which cleaning products are used. There are plenty of pet-safe cleaning products that you can buy which contain fewer chemicals in them so they’re less likely to harm your pet if they come into contact with them. If you do not want to use chemicals at all natural products like, baking soda, vinegar and lemon juice are good cleaning alternatives.

Make sure you put products away carefully after you’ve finished with them. Store them well out of reach of your pet, just like you would for children. Empty out and rinse mop buckets so they’re not full of bleach. If you have put bleach down the toilet, close the lid so your pet can’t drink from it. Also if we advise that you do not leave sink unblocking chemicals in sinks or shower trays when your pets are around.

Why are cleaning products dangerous?

If ingested some cleaning products can cause severe burns and ulcers in our pet's throats and stomach. This can cause permanent damage and can even be fatal.

What should I do if my pet has come into contact with cleaning products?

If you think your pet has ingested or come into contact with any cleaning products please call us and advise the veterinary surgeon of which cleaning products it was.

Signs that your pet has come into contact with cleaning products include:

Ulcers and sore looking skin. This could be on their paws or, if they’ve swallowed the product, inside their mouth or on their tongue.
Being sick or coughing much more than usual.
Collapsing
Seeming to have much less energy than usual.
Trouble eating.
Dribbling or foaming at the mouth.
Rubbing their face and mouth with their paws.

11) Batteries-What will happen if a dog eats a battery?

It may come as no surprise that one third of all battery sales are surrounding the festive period. At this time of year and many of us will have batteries around the home. Household batteries can contain chemicals which can pose a dangerous threat to our pets if chewed or swallowed. We wish to make you aware of the potentially fatal threat that household batteries pose to our pets!

If a battery is punctured or swallowed, there is risk the alkaline or acidic chemicals may leak out which can result in severe corrosive injury. The most common types of batteries ingested or chewed by dogs are alkaline dry cell battery e.g AA, AAA or button/disc batteries. Disc batteries are often attractive to pets as they are shiny. If a battery is ingested, if possible the mouth should be carefully flushed out for 15-20 minutes with tepid water and immediate veterinary attention should be sought.

Luckily these cases remain relatively rare. Please ensure that if you have any batteries around the house, including button batteries, that these are stored out of reach of pets and small children. If you suspect that your pet may have ingested a battery (of any type) then please contact us straight away.

12) Essential oils- Which essential oils are toxic for pets?

Each essential oil is different and some may cause more adverse reactions than others. If you are considering using essential oils in your home it is advisable to contact us first to see if these are safe for your pets.

The problems can come if your pet is exposed to an essential oil diffuser or the oil in it's pure form, for example if they get the oil on their fur or paws and lick it off. A particularly harmful essential oil to our pets is 'Tea tree oil', also known as Melaleuca oil. Tea tree oil is often found in varying concentrations and high concentrations should never be used on pets. As little as 7 drops of 100% oil has resulted in severe poisoning, and applications of 10-20 mls of 100% oil have resulted in poisoning and death in both dogs and cats.

Clinical signs: includes weakness, unsteady walking or an inability to walk, tremors, coma, increased liver enzymes. In the most severe cases some essential oils can be fatal. If your dog or cat have been exposed to Tea tree oil or any essential oil that you are unsure of please call us immediately.

13) Cannabis Oil- Cannabidiol (CBD) oil products for pets

It can be difficult to find reliable, credible sources on Cannabis uses in pets. We would like to share this information from the most recent newsletter published by the Veterinary Poisons Information Service (2018).

"Various oils are produced from different strains of Cannabis sativa , using different methods of preparation and cannabidiol (CBD) oil products have been much in the news recently...CBD oil is produced from the flowers, leaves and stalks of Cannabis sativa.... Currently cannabis-derived products are only legal in the UK as long as they contain less than 0.2% tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the main psychoactive substance in cannabis. As long as no medical claims are made, and it is clearly marketed as a food supplement, then it is legal to possess, buy and sell...The Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) considers veterinary products containing cannabidiol (CBD) are veterinary medicines and should be regulated as such. CBD products for use in animals therefore now require a marketing authorisation before they can be sold or supplied in the UK. There are currently no CBD based products that have been granted a UK veterinary marketing authorisation and a veterinary surgeon may prescribe a legally obtained human CBD product under the provisions of the prescribing cascade. Administration of an unauthorised product containing CBD without a veterinary prescription is an offence under Regulation 8 of the Veterinary Medicines Regulations (VMR). Companies supplying CBD products for human use in line with the requirements of the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) must not indicate or recommend their products for use on animals. The VMD has written to UK CBD suppliers and manufacturers to inform them of the decision and to ensure products containing CBD satisfy the requirements of the VMR.

There is currently limited research on the safety and efficacy of CBD oil in pets, but it appears to be well tolerated with only mild side effects (e.g. lethargy, increased appetite)."

14) Pine Needles. What happens if a dog eats pine needles? Is pine sap poisonous to cats?

Christmas trees themselves, whether real or artificial, can be a hazard to your pet. Especially if you own a cat that has a tendency to climb things they shouldn’t. The oils produced by some real Christmas trees are also mildly toxic if consumed, causing minor irritation to a pet’s mouth and stomach.

Be cautious if using any fertilisers or plant food on your tree if it’s potted, as many are toxic to pets and can also seep into watering trays and be ingested. It can also be helpful to remember that containers with soil might also get used as litter trays!

Additionally, there is a very small risk that sharp pine needles can cause internal damage if swallowed, or can get into eyes or ears – but these cases are extremely rare.

15) Holly and Ivy. Is Holly poisonous to pets?

On the third day we discussed the dangers of poinsettias to our pets. Today we are looking at Holly. Certain types of yuletide plants ( can be toxic to our beloved pets. Varieties of English, Japanese, and Chinese Holly contain toxic chemicals. When Christmas or English holly is ingested, it can result in severe gastrointestinal upset and your pet will usually display signs of vomiting and/or diarrhoea. If ingested other signs that may be displayed are lip smacking, drooling, and head shaking excessively. We would advise that all yuletide plants are kept out of reach of your pets during the holidays. If you suspect your pet has ingested holly or any of our festive plants mentioned please contact us.

16) Onions, Garlic and leeks. How much onion and garlic is toxic to dogs? What happens if a cat eats onion?

Onions, garlic, chives and leeks (Allium species):

When onions and garlic are ingested in sufficient amounts by our pets the chemicals in these foods have the ability to destroy their red blood cells causing severe anemia. Ingestion of onions or garlic of more than 0.5% of dog’s body weight are potentially toxic. Interestingly cats and some Japanese breeds of dog such as the Akita are more sensitive to the toxic effects than most. Symptoms are generally secondary to the anemia and include weakness, lethargy and pale coloured gums.

Signs and Symptoms:

Onion/garlic smell on breath, lethargy, pale gums (due to anemia), elevated respiratory rate and/or elevated heart rate, vomiting, and a reduced appetite.

Treatment:

Contact us immediately if you think your pet has eaten any onions, garlic, leeks so we can give timely appropriate treatment.

17) Macadamia nuts. Is it safe for dogs to eat macadamia nuts?

Not all nuts are toxic to our canine companions but it is helpful to know that Macadamia nuts in particular are toxic to dogs. D epending on the amount nuts ingested, symptoms of severe lethargy, increased body temperature, vomiting, tremors, joint stiffness, and inability to walk (due hind limb weakness) may be seen. The toxic mechanism is unknown but can affect nerve and muscle function. Some dogs may also develop pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) due to the high oil content of these nuts. If you suspect your pet may have eaten macadamia nuts or a product containing these please contact us right away for advice.

18) Lillies. Are Lillies harmful to cats?

This is particularly important most Lillie's pose a significant risk to our cats and can unfortunately prove fatal. It is important to note that in some species of Lilly all parts of the plant are toxic from the leaves, petals and the stamen, including sometimes the water in their vase. 19)Fungi – mushrooms and toadstools. What are the symptoms of mushroom poisoning in dogs?

There are several species of mushrooms across our beautiful country sides and woodlands. In general, all mushroom ingestion by pets should be considered toxic unless proven otherwise. According to the Pet Poison Helpline depending on the type/species of mushroom ingested, several general organ systems can be affected from the gastrointestinal system causing vomiting and diarrhea, to the central nervous system causing weakness and seizures. Some mushrooms can even affect the kidneys and liver. Some mushroom toxins will affect pets very rapidly (within 15-30 minutes of ingestion) while others will not produce signs for many hours (up to 24 hours). If you think your pet may have eaten a mushroom please contact us for advice. If possible please take a photo of the mushroom you think you pet has eaten as this will help us identify it.

20)Fruit stones. Are peaches OK for dogs to eat?

The most common culprit we see for fruit stones are peach or nectarine pits/stones. These stones can become stuck in our pets digestive system and act as a foreign body causing a blockage. Peach stones contain a sugar-cyanide compound called amygdalin. Although a dog would have to consume several peach pits to be affected there is a more serious danger to these stones. If your dog tries to eat it whole, it can get lodged in his throat and cause difficulty breathing, similarly if your pet ingests the peach stone it can become stuck in the intestines and cause a blockage. This type of blockage would be an emergency as it may take a day or so for your pet to show any signs but can prove fatal. If you suspect your pet has eaten a fruit stone please contact us immediately.

21)Mistletoe. How poisonous is mistletoe to pets?

Another festive plant rears its head. Mistletoe. There are several types of mistletoe which can be poisonous to pets: Phoradendron serotinum (American variety) and Viscum album (European variety). The American mistletoe is less toxic than the European varieties of it. Berries from this holiday plant contain polysaccharides, alkaloids, and lectins. When accidentally ingested by our pets, mistletoe poisoning can result in mild signs of gastrointestinal irritation (e.g., drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain). When ingested in large amounts, abnormal heart rate, collapse, hypotension (low blood pressure), ataxia (wobbling when walking), seizures and death have also been reported.

To be on the safe side, keep your mistletoe out of reach of your dogs and cats during the holidays. If you suspect your pet has ingested mistletoe, contact us for treatment recommendations.

22)Christmas pudding and mince pies

Incase you missed day 2! Christmas puddings and mince pies are jam packed with currants, raisins, and sultanas. Here is a reminder as to why this is dangerous to our pets.

How dangerous are grapes and raisins to dogs?
It only takes a very small amount of grapes, raisins, sultanas or currants to cause severe issues in some dogs and can even cause fatalities. Unlike chocolate, the problem with these fruits is there is no correlation between the amount of fruit eaten and the size of dog and research has not yet revealed which part of the grape is toxic to our dogs. Meaning whilst one dog may have eaten a handful and been OK, it may only take eating a single one to prove fatal in another dog. For this reason, it’s not advisable to feed any grapes, raisins, sultanas or currants to your dog. Our simple advice is to be aware of any products containing these fruits and to store foods containing these ingredients well out of reach of your dog. If you’re baking at home this Christmas with these potentially toxic ingredients be extra careful and do not leave children alone with your dogs in the kitchen.

How long does it take for raisins and grapes to affect your dog?
If you suspect your pet has eaten any of these fruits please contact us immediately as quick treatment is key to a favourable prognosis. If left too long in the most serious cases these fruits can cause sudden kidney and liver failure so it is advisable to contact us before any symptoms are shown, so the appropriate level of treatment can be determined.

23) Fatty Foods.

Avoid offering your pet fatty foods such as bacon, ham, meat trimmings etc this Christmas. Whilst we are sure they will love the taste it might not love them. Foods high in fat not only lead to unnecessary weight gain but can also harm their digestive systems. Rich foods with high fat content can cause pancreatitis flare ups in our pets. Symptoms include vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhoea. The high salt content of these foods can also make our pets excessively thirsty. It is best avoided all round. We have healthy vegetarian treat sicks in practice which make a great alternative.

24) Cooked bones. Are cooked bones dangerous for pets?

Cooked bones should always be off-limits to our pets. They become brittle and easily break into sharp splinter like shards that can do a lot of damage. These shards have the potential to cause damange in the mouth, perforiate the esophagus or do further damage when they pass through the intestines which can prove fatal. Never feed your dog cooked bones . This includes left over Christmas dinner birds. If your pet has got hold of any cooked bones please contact us for advice.

25) Alcohol

Our final hazard of Christmas 2018. Alcohol. Most owners know not to give alcoholic drinks to their pets; however, alcohol poisoning in pets is more common than you think! Some pets will drink alcoholic beverages right out of the glass left on the side or may lap them off the floor if they spill. At this time of year alcohol is also found in surprising places including unbaked yeast bread dough and desserts made with alcohol. When pets ingest rising bread dough, alcohol from the fermenting yeast in the dough is rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream and can result in alcohol poisoning. Ingestion of alcohol can cause dangerous drops in blood sugar, blood pressure, and body temperature. Severely intoxicated animals can potentially experience seizures and respiratory failure. If your pet has got hold of alcohol please contact our vets for advice.

Do our pets feel pain?

Our staff are dedicated to developing their skills and knowledge to ensure we can continue to provide the best care for your pets. Subsequently one of our veterinary surgeons Michael Crane was recently able to spend a very interesting and insightful two hours at a vet meeting. This meeting covered the latest news about effective pain control in dogs and cats.
Here are Michael’s thoughts on how animals can be protected from pain.

All the research now shows that without doubt our animal friends and patients experience pain in exactly the same way we do. Thanks to this research we are able to do so much more to help our friends and patients cope with pain. This might be pain experienced after surgery or an accident, or it might be due to longstanding problems such as dental disease or arthritis.

Nowadays we can often use the same range of drugs employed in human medicine with confidence for our pets when required. We should aim not only to identify early on when pain relief is needed and which drug is most appropriate, but also to prevent as far as we can those problems that cause pain as age advances. We shouldn't expect them to suffer in silence.

Two of the most common and frequently underestimated problems we see are arthritis and dental disease. Owners and their vets can work together to prevent and treat these painful problems.

Halloween hazards and keeping your pets safe

Halloween dangers and advice on how you can have a fun and safe Halloween with your family, including your pets.

Trick or treater's at the door

Where possible it is advised that dogs and cats should be kept inside during Halloween night.

If you pet is particularly nervous it can be worth placing a sign on your door requesting no trick or treater's. If you require more advice on how to reduce stress for your pet please refer to our firework blog. If possible make your pet a separate area away from the constant opening and closing or the door, knocking or doorbells. As trick or treater's tend to be in groups with scary costumes on it is worth ensuring your pet is not near the door when opened to avoid them bolting. Please ensure that all microchip details and identification tags are up to date just in case. It is also advisable to walk your pet in the day light hours to avoid stressful encounters with costumed trick or treater's.

Sweets and Chocolate for Trick or Treat visitors

If you own a dog you may well be aware that chocolate and raisins are poisonous to our canine companions with potentially fatal effects however many owners are unaware of the danger posed by some sweets. Certain sweeties contain the low-calorie sweetener 'xylitol'. Xylitol can prove even more poisonous to dogs than chocolate . Some of the packaging and wrappers can also prove dangerous if swallowed by pets, causing choking or blockages of the intestine.

It is good practice at any time to ensure chocolate, sweets and empty wrappers including toffee apple skewers! Aren’t left anywhere which is accessible to your pet. If you think your pet has eaten anything they shouldn't please call us immediately. If the surgery is closed please use our 24 hour emergency service to contact the on duty vet.

Some of us love creating a spooky Halloween atmosphere in and around our homes which often involves the use of candles whether inside our carved pumpkins or around the house. It is important to be aware that our pets are often attracted to bright lights especially when in a darkened environment. It is also important to ensure that these candles are not on a level where they are accessible to your pets, or where your cats will jump. Be particularly careful with candles around playful puppies and kittens. Pets should NEVER be left alone in a room with candles lit. It is also worth mentioning many owners are opting to use Halloween costumes for their pets. Please make sure if you choose to use a pet costume that the costume does not restrict your pets movement, obscure their vision or cause them stress or irritation.

How to keep pets safe and happy during firework night.

Many of us will be all too aware of the unease that bonfire night , new years eve and the surrounding period can cause our pets. It would appear that fireworks have already started in and around Sidmouth, so Jurassic Vets have compiled top tips below to help keep your pet calm and safe during this season. If you feel your pet struggles with the sounds of fireworks and you feel they may be noise averse please call us as soon as possible and we may be able to provide further advice and also have medications in stock that can help manage the situation if appropriate. Possible signs your pet is distressed because of fireworks it’s possible they’ll pace up and down and pant heavily. They may also bark or meow more than normal, tremble, hide or drool. Other signs of distress include destructiveness and soiling unexpectedly.

The days leading up to bonfire night can be hugely stressful for all pets. Dogs, in particular, are often badly affected by fireworks. Some get so scared they run off, and every year vets see pets who have been involved in road traffic accidents after being spooked by loud bangs. It is important to walk your pet during daylight hours. Also ensuring that they have their microchip details up to date as well their identification tags in case they do run off. If you notice your pet is missing please contact all veterinary practices to notify them of your pets details and where they went missing from. T

For Dogs:

* Keep your pet safe inside during the fireworks. Ensure you close all doors and windows and you could even draw the curtains to make your home as soundproof as possible and block out the bright flashes of light.

* Leaving the TV or radio on can help to cancel out some of the sounds from outside and provide familiar, calming noises for your pet. Ensure the volume is not too loud.

*Wherever possible it is advisable not to leave your pet alone in the house when they’re scared or anxious.

* Take your dog for a walk earlier in the day if cool enough. This will allow them to utilise excess energy before the evening fireworks start and may help keep them calmer and more relaxed.

* Do not punish your dog for showing fearful behaviour. If they are frightened then it is OK to comfort them. Contrary to what you will often hear it is not possible to reinforce an emotion such as fear.

* Your dog’s bed will be their usual safe haven but they may also appreciate other areas to hide such as a ‘dog den’ like an open crate with a favourite toy in or some blankets.

*Games or indoor activities can provide a welcome distraction for your dog if they are anxious.

For Cats:

* Do not try to pick up your cat if they are scared. If you attempt to restrain them, they could scratch or bite you.

* Cats will usually hide when they are scared – so ensure their favourite hiding place is accessible. Don’t be tempted to coax them out as it’s best to act normal and ignore fearful behaviour.

* Ensure you have a litter tray available in the house for the duration of the fireworks.

For Rabbits, Guinea Pigs and Small Pets:

*If your rabbit, guinea pig or small pet normally lives in an outdoor hutch then, if possible, place it in a quieter place such as a garage or even inside your home.

*Another good idea is to turn the hutch so it faces a wall or fence so your pet isn’t exposed to the bright flashes. You could also attempt to cover their enclosure in thick blankets to dampen the unusual noises.

*Make sure you give your pet extra bedding to let them burrow into to feel safer.

*Putting your pet in their hutch earlier than normal will let them settle and feel safer before the fireworks begin.

Lumps and bumps on my pet! Should I be worried?

Advice on lumps and bumps from Jurassic Vets

Are you worrying about a lump on your pet that didn’t seem to be there before? Finding a lump on your pet is a natural cause of concern for owners. It can be caused by infections or even cancers but most lumps that appear on our pets are benign. Here is a short guide to how we at Jurassic Vets can find out what a lump is, and how we can treat the lump if needed. Every pet is an individual, and your vet at Jurassic Vets will help you to decide what is right for you and your pet.

What could it be?

Many different diseases can appear as lumps on, in, or beneath the skin. Tumours are well known but lumps can also be caused by abscesses (pockets of infection), cysts (pockets of fluid), inflammation, allergic reactions, foreign bodies (like grass seeds) or can be benign (harmless) growths like fatty lumps or warts.

How can we find out what it is?

At Jurassic Vets we strongly support 'evidence based medicine' and believe that the best care for pets can only happen if we can be certain of what the diagnosis is. Some lumps such as warts can be identified with a reasonable degree of certainty just by looking and feeling them, but many will need more investigation to be certain.

Our most common means of investigating a lump is a Fine Needle Aspirate (FNA). This involves using a normal injection needle to extract cells from the lump and then send these to the lab. Most pets will tolerate this very well, some patients that are very nervous or have a lump in an awkward location (such as the face or feet) may need an anaesthetic for this.

Our samples are sent to one of the UK's leading specialist veterinary labs, based at Exeter University. Results often provide a good idea of what the lump is, however sometimes further investigations will be required such as a repeat FNA or a bigger sample, in the form of a surgical biopsy under general anaesthetic. During your appointment to discuss the lump our Vets will conduct a full clinical exam of your pet as there might be another clue elsewhere that helps us understand what the lump is, or provide an indication to a problem that needs treatment. This is one reason why we are proud to offer longer consultation than most other practices. The recommended treatment will depend on the identity of the lump -many will need no treatment, while others can be treated accordingly.

Can the lump be removed without identifying it?

Removing the lump without identifying it is possible, but not usually advisable - some tumours may infiltrate outwards and without understanding whether the lump is a tumour, or what type of tumour it is impossible to decide whether removal is actually needed, or to plan the right type of surgery.

The nastiest tumour will require a large margin of skin to be removed as well as the tumour. Without knowing what the lump is, we risk taking an inadequate margin and leaving bits of tumour behind – or alternatively, taking a much bigger margin of skin than is needed if the lump is in fact benign, meaning a longer and more major surgery. However, exceptions may be made if a lump is already causing problems, such as bleeding or ulceration.

Can we just monitor it?

Your vet will be able to give you an idea of how concerned they are about the lump, but might not be able to identify it for certain without taking sample. If your vet thinks a lump is unlikely to be harmful. then monitoring it might be a reasonable choice. Taking a photograph and keeping note of the size and position of the lump will help you to decide if it is growing or changing in future (describing its size in comparison to food items like a pea or a grape can be a good way to record it!)

What if it's a cancer?

Cancer is a name for a tumour that has started to spread, either locally by growing into surrounding tissues like tree roots (which we call infiltration), or to distant places in the body like seeds (which we call metastasis). Tumour can often be stopped from spreading if we can catch them early enough- this is one of the main reasons that we prefer to see pets as soon as a lump appears.

Lump removal surgery

Surgery is usually the best way to remove a lump and this can be carried out in our operating theater under general anaesthetic. Tumour removals are prioritised and can usually be booked in within days of identifying the lump. If the tumour has spread then treatment may still be possible – your vet will advise you about this. Your vet may want to run tests such as a blood sample, Xrays or an ultrasound scan to check that there are no signs of the lump having spread too far before carrying out the operation.

Like humans, dogs and cats can have allergies that range from mild to severe.

Like humans, our pets can have allergies from many different sources. However, pet allergy symptoms can be completely different than ours. Pets can suffer from allergies such as food, pollens, insects, moulds or mites. This week we will look at what symptoms they may show as well as what can be done to help!

Rabbit Awareness Week

We will be using this week to look at what a rabbit needs to be happy and healthy. From environment to diet and companionship.

A rabbit's diet should be made up of good quality pellets, fresh hay (timothy or other grass hays), oat hay, fresh clean water and fresh vegetables. Anything beyond that is a “treat” and should be given in limited quantities. Recent research shows that Muesli diets can lead to teeth and tummy problems for our bunnies if you wish to discuss your rabbits diet please make an appointment with one of our Veterinary nurses.

Adder bite advice

What should I do if my pet gets bitten by an adder?

We are fortunate enough to be surrounded by beautiful county side with endless walks for our dogs. These areas of rocky hillsides, moorland and woodland edges are common places for The European Adders to be found, as well as occasionally found on dry sand dunes and heaths. As it stands, the adder is the only venomous snake native to the UK and are protected by law in Great Britain. This means that it is illegal to intentionally kill or injure adders, or to trade in them. The adults adders are easy to identify as they have distinctive markings with a black or brown zigzag pattern along their back and a noticeable V-shaped marking on the back of their heads. At adult size adders can be up to 2 meters long. Adders usually only bite in self-defense when they are disturbed or stepped on by a dog.

This is the peak time to be seeing adders and adder bites, as their hibernation period began in October and ended in late April. With the warmer weather they can be seen basking in the sunshine. Urgent treatment will be needed if your dog has been bitten by an adder and it is imperative to check if your vets stock the anti-venom.

At Jurassic Vets we have made sure we have the anti-venom in stock at our practice - we won’t need to obtain it from a distant practice. This means we can offer your pet immediate treatment in a critical situation. Please contact us as soon as possible if you suspect your pet has had an Adder bite. We also run our own out of hours emergency service should this happen outside of our working hours.

How would I know if my pet has been bitten by an Adder?

Typically, after an Adder bite the first symptom is a swelling that can be dark in colour. Most bites occur on a dog’s legs or face. It may even be possible to see two small puncture wounds in the middle of the swelling. If the swelling is around the face it is important to be aware this could result in breathing difficulties. Your dog will also show signs of pain, may be vocal or may appear nervous. Other signs to look out for after adder bite can include pale gums, bruising, drooling, vomiting, diarrhoea, dehydration, restlessness, drowsiness, and lethargy.

Eventually, if left untreated, dogs may collapse, have blood clotting problems, tremors or convulsions - adder bites can sometimes be fatal.

A month to acknowledge and learn about the duties of a registered veterinary nurse and the importance of protecting their title!

Many of you have seen our display and decorations in our waiting room celebrating Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month! Why are we celebrating this? And what does VNAM18 mean? Outside of the consulting room, most of the attention and medical care your pet receives is at the hands of a veterinary nurse.

It is this we celebrate each May, as Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month (VNAM) gives us an opportunity to talk about our role in caring for your pets. In any given day a veterinary nurse may find themselves taking x-rays, medicating patients, doing consults, maintaining equipment, monitoring anaesthetics, dressing wounds, answering phones, running nursing clinics and the list goes on!

The title “Veterinary Nurse” is not yet protected in law (scarily meaning anyone can use it), but it is advised by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons that it should be taken to mean only Registered Veterinary Nurses (RVNs).

Jurassic Vets is proud to employ RVN's, as RVN's have undertaken a rigorous training programme, sat examinations, and are subject to a Code of Conduct, which includes a disciplinary process if a grievance should arise. They undergo continued study, and log professional development hours to maintain our Registration throughout their careers. Some RVNs undertake specialist training in a range of topics, especially the care of exotic pets, feline medicine, anaesthesia and dentistry. There are several different routes to becoming a veterinary nurse from the diploma to a degree. The BVNA can provide you advice on the career and studying, if you are interested in pursuing this career.

The British Veterinary Nursing Association (BVNA) represents RVNs and promotes responsible pet care to the general public through Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month (VNAM). During VNAM you may see a display in your local practice, or an event in your town or village.

Some practices even run special clinics that you are able to book , Jurassic Vets nursing team run dedicated nursing clinics that can help your pet with appointments such as nail clipping, anal gland emptying, dental checks, weight and nutrition management and post op checks including stitch removals.

This is a chance for us to interact with our clients and the public, so don’t be shy. Ask about what your RVNs do, and their special interests. You may find they can help you with a pet problem you have been having. Also, RVNs usually have pets themselves, and love to talk about them just as you do!

Information for owners on Alabama Rot (Cutaneous and renal glomerular vasculopathy [CRGV])

Jurassic Vets information on Alabama Rot

Recently we have had a few owners contact us concerned about Alabama Rot (Cutaneous and renal glomerular vasculopathy [CRGV]) mainly fueled by a range of social media posts and online articles. We are more than happy to discuss queries of this nature with owners if concerned. We have been asked where can owners find reliable online information about this disease. This note aims to provide just that! We must stress that although CRGV can be very serious and even fatal it is thankfully still relatively uncommon. Whilst Alabama Rot can be very serious, the number of dogs affected with skin lesions and kidney failure remains low (122 confirmed cases across the UK between November ‘12 and Jan’18). That said, it is a worrying disease for all dog owners. So please read the below information.

Anderson Moores Veterinary specialists are heavily researching this disease, they confirm cases and are searching for a cause. The cause of Alabama Rot is not yet known however investigations are ongoing. Including emerging research that is looking into whether a particular bacteria called Aeromonas hydrophila could be a contributing factor for the disease. If you would like to look for reliable information online it can be found on the Anderson Moores website

There is also a map available that shows locations of confirmed cases in partnership with AndersonMoores. Whilst there were reports of a suspected case in Sidbury last year this case was not officially confirmed and Sidmouth currently does not feature on the map of confirmed cases.

Many owners have contacted us for advice on where to walk their dogs or where to avoid. As there is currently no evidence on the exact cause. We would encourage pet owners to carry on as normal but take precautions such as washing their dogs off after walking in muddy woodland and to be on their guard against any unusual ulcerated lesions on your dogs body, particularly on the paws,legs, body, face, tongue or mouth; as these are often the first sign of this disease. Especially if these symptoms are combined with others such as lethargy, weakness, vomiting, and not eating. It is important to remember that most of the time a skin problem will NOT be caused by CRGV; however, the lesions caused by Alabama Rot can be difficult to distinguish from cuts, wounds, stings or bites, so if you have any concerns about your pet please make an appointment to come a see one of our vets.
