Helping your puppy settle in at home

Adaptil Junior collars have been designed to help puppies develop in to confident adult dogs

Bringing a puppy home is very exciting but can be challenging for both you and your puppy. They have after all just been separated from their mum, siblings and placed in an unusual environment; with new, strange people. Adaptil junior collars have been scientifically proven to reduce the stress caused by such events.

How does Adaptil help?

After birth a pheromone is released by the mother dog to reassure and comfort her puppies. The pheromone can be found in the area surrounding the mammary glands helping the puppies feel safe and secure.

Adaptil is a synthetic copy of this ‘dog appeasing’ pheromone. Meaning if fitted on collection, the appeasing pheromone will help support the puppy through these big changes.

In a study puppies fitted with an Adaptil collar between 8 and 15 weeks, there were ‘significant beneficial effects on behaviour’. Suggesting that Adaptil collars ‘reduce stress and increase the capacity to learn’.

An Adaptil junior collar can be fitted immediately after collecting the puppy. In order to see the maximum benefits from the collar, it must remain fitted for 4 weeks (unless shampooing or washing the puppy). The pheromone is released from the collar by the puppies body heat therefore the fit of the collar needs to be checked regularly.

Why use Adaptil?

Adaptil comforts puppies during their new challenges and experiences, it has been proven to help:

Reduce night crying

Adapt to new situations

Training and socialisation

Cope when home alone

Puppies wearing an Adaptil collar during the critical stage of socialisation, influenced their development. Helping to reduce fear and stress. ‘Which may lead to anxiety related behavioural problems in later life’.

An Adaptil Junior collar can be purchased from Jurassic Vets

Combating night crying

The most common difficulty new owners face with their puppies is sleepless nights. Night crying can be caused by a combination of fear, stress and anxiety. Triggered by a new environment.

When combined with other factors, Adaptil can help puppies feel at ease and sleep through the night. It is important to ensure puppies have a clear bed time routine and bed area. The addition of an Adaptil collar can reduce night crying by 86% as soon as 3 days after the introduction in their new how.

For more information on combating night crying come along to our puppy parties. Alternatively you can discuss this at a ‘Weighing appointment’ with one of our Registered Veterinary Nurses.

Learning to be home alone

Very young puppies should not be left alone for long periods of time. This can result in severe separation anxiety as they grow up. Puppies should be trained to stay at home alone and time should be dedicated to helping them learn to be comfortable being alone.

Combining time, a suitable environment and toys; an Adaptil collar can help comfort puppies while they are alone. It is important to ensure all other factors are considered before leaving a puppy home alone. Including:

Provide a comfortable environment

Be discrete leaving and returning

Build up gradually

Reacting well in new and unexpected situations

During the socialisation period, it is critical to expose puppies to as many situations as possible. This will help them grow in to well socialised dogs and be able to cope in a variety of situations.

Positive experiences will help young puppies associate events with good things. Completing our socialisation table will help keep track of all the new experiences the puppy has had.

Training

Adaptil has been proven to help puppies increase their learning capacity by helping them feel confident and reassured. This can help make positive training techniques easier when combined with the collar.

It is vital however that some Golden rules are followed when training a puppy.

Short sessions

Positive reward based training

Patience and consistence

Start early

If necessary take a step back to prevent the puppy becoming overwhelmed

For more information on puppy training come along to our puppy parties. Alternatively you can discuss this at a ‘Weighing appointment’ with one of out Registered Veterinary Nurses.

It is important to remember that the desired out come is a well rounded, well behaved and confident adult dog. Therefore the time invested in puppies should have that outcome in mind. The use of an Adaptil junior collar has been proven to help this process. However, it is predominately down to the owner. Therefore at Jurassic vets, we will be running Puppy Parties on a 4 weekly basis to support new puppy owners and puppies in their new adventures.
